Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Indianola District Curriculum

In Language Arts, Indianola Schools believe in teaching the students how to read a variety of genre. Beginning early the students learn to read stories and then to be able to answer questions to instill a sense of proficiency. The students then begin to read books from many time periods and cultures and become able to find the main subject matter and how to support the subject. In high school, students discover how to find critical clues and interpretations in their reading as they learn how author’s create their works.

Math begins with children learning how to understand numbers, place values and basic addition and subtraction. This builds a foundation on with they can learn about fractions, multiplication, division as well as ratios. As they enter high school, the students learn how to use Pythagoras’ theory and use polynomials. They also have the option of taking Geometry or advance mathematics in high school. This allows the students to become proficient enough to use mathematics whenever its need crosses their path in the adult world.

Chalk Talk: Reading Homework Tips for Parents

Most parents would like their children to develop a love for reading. There are ways that parents can help this skill along. Parents need to have their children read to them every day in a quiet place, with no distractions. When they are reading aloud, parents can point out patterns either in spelling or in sounds, such as had, bad sad. If a child makes a mistake when reading aloud, gently point out the word that was misread and then have the child reread the sentence to make sure they understand what they are reading. With these few hints a child can be well on their way to loving books.
