James City District and Curriculum
At the Craven County Schools, the course curricula entails many different courses and subjects, the syllabi of each of them is well defined and comprehensive and includes all topics and subtopics as per international requirements. A step by step gradual approach is taken by the teachers and staff members to ensure complete and thorough learning by the students. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the James City District Curriculum
For the subject of Math and English, basic topics like number counting, learning the alphabet and sounds are introduced at elementary school level. These topics are increased in complexity as further on topics like creative writing, grammar skills, sentence construction are introduced in English. Likewise in Math, topics include numerical operations, fractions and their operations, shapes and measurement, and sharing and dividing concepts are introduced to the students.
As far as Computer Studies is concerned, initially students are taught verbally the different parts of the computer and their uses, later on more intricate skills relevant to the grades are introduced. Similarly, for Science, topics like the different parts of the body, their uses, parts of a plant are started off at the first grade. Other topics like machines, weather, heat and electricity are explained to the students at higher grades. Students are also taught how to study natural phenomenon using the scientific process and are expected to develop strong scientific literacy skills.

Keeping Informed: Recent James City Educational News
- WJCC Receive Certificate of Excellence: - The Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools received the Association of School Business Officials International’s (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award. They had successfully met the program’s high standards for financial reporting and accountability.
- WJCC Students Participate in the Run in D.O.G. Street 5K - Around 400 students, staff members and family members all united together, along with a group of athletes and ran across D.O.G. Street 5K. The program was arranged by Melissa Natter, teacher of special education.
- Orchestra Solo Festival - The 2014 Elementary Orchestra Solo Festival was held at Mataoaka Elementary School where students from 9 different school took part. The performances were beautiful and two of them were declared the best.
- Learning Barn for the Students - The Farm Bureau presented the students of Norge Elementary School, a “Learning Barn” that was full of books and educational material for the students to read and study.

There are many ways you can make your kid think and ponder, before s/he performs an action. Ask your kids various simple questions like what s/he did with his friends at school today? Or what s/he had for lunch yesterday? Where s/he would like to go for an outing? Similarly, there are a number of games you can play with your child, like Tic-Tac-Toe, Dominoes, UNO. These games are very useful to enhance a kid’s thinking and in turn, his/her cognitive skills. S/he may start to learn tips and tricks needed for him to win and also would know gradually to make strategies how to defeat the opponent. Also, as your kid grows older, you can provide him or her with toys like Jigsaw Puzzles, Lego blocks and also ask him/her to follow the directions provided and act accordingly. This will give them a lot of opportunities to prove themselves at learning and following skills.
