Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kannapolis District Curriculum

The curriculum for Language Arts focuses on all areas of communication, with a significant emphasis on reading and writing. Students are expected to learn strategies for reading that help them to unlock meaning by decoding words, recognizing tone and point of view, and drawing upon their own ideas to analyze the information within texts. Writing is taught as a process by which students brainstorm, draft, revise and edit their written work so that they can develop ideas and gain skills in language usage.

The Math curriculum address the areas of numeracy, geometry and measurement, algebraic relations and patterns, and data and statistics. These topics are introduced to early learners in a hands-on approach and developed into more focused courses in the later years. Mathematic literacy and the ability to communicate mathematic reasoning are also goals of the curriculum; students are expected to understand what the best methods are to solve a problem and to explain their reasoning.
