Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kingman District Curriculum

The curriculum is rich, broadly-based and organized to challenge each student in every grade with clear instructional design and programming. In each academic subject, essential learning expectations are clearly stated, such as ways to understand probability in math or developing comprehension strategies for reading. Assessments are embedded in the curriculum, and so, each student’s progress is monitored for academic growth during the year.

Students with differentiated learning styles can take advantage of the multiple special education programs available. There are numerous opportunities for enrichment activities and extracurricular participation and they are designed to help students achieve individual goals that will help them see through their future pursuits. Additionally, the electives offered foster the cross-curricular connections which are a goal of curriculum and instruction in Kingman.

  • Little Explorers - In an effort to help the families in the community, the Kingman Unified School District has established a Preschool Program and an Early Learning Center. Both programs are licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services and accredited by the National Accreditation Commission. There are two separate sites: the Mt. Tipton Preschool located at Dolan Springs, and the Desert Willow Preschool located at Desert Willow. The Little Explorers Early Learning Center is a child care center for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old and is located on the Kingman High School Campus. Chalk Talk: Keys to a Successful Alternative School Setting

Everyone is different and therefore everyone has a different style of learning. Most school districts have developed programs for those students who are not succeeding in a traditional educational setting, those students with a different style of learning. However, studies have shown that those alternative programs with a particular formula have been the ones to experience more success. The program starts with a small student body, creating a specific program for each child, with clear instructions, a discipline code for every child to understand and follow, a supportive staff who gives positive reinforcement, high expectations for learning, and lastly and family and community support and involvement. All of these factors have been the formula for a successful alternative school environment.
