Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Mesa District Curriculum

The curriculum used in La Mesa is developed by the Department of Education to ensure that student learning reaches the expectations that bring about students who are proficient in their subjects. The curriculum is organized so that it provides an overview of the skills that students need to develop in the different areas of each subject. These skills represent the learning standards and proficiency expectations that students will be assessed on in classroom and statewide assessments.

For the subjects of Math and English/Language Arts, the schools follow the Common Core Standards which are used throughout the country because they provide high quality and achievable outcomes. For subjects like Science, History and Social Studies, Technology Programs and so on, the state has developed curricular framework that explain what it is that students will learn in their courses. Each year's knowledge prepares students for their coming years by following an organized, year-by-year plan for teaching.
