Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lake Geneva District Curriculum
The middle school earth space science curriculum was devised to give students insight into the properties of objects in the earth and sky. Rocks and soils are explored, with students using proper procedures for examining materials. Learners also develop the appropriate vocabulary for identifying and describing those materials. Students examine various water and landmasses in Wisconsin and use proper vocabulary when classifying them. Celestial bodies are studied as well. Learners identify the sun, moon, and stars, and note the patterns by which those bodies move across the sky. The daily and yearly movements of the earth on its axis and around the sun are discussed as well.
Lake Geneva’s high school physical education curriculum promotes the development of skills and knowledge that lead to a healthy lifestyle. Students undertake a host of physical activities that maintain and enhance their overall health and fitness. Learners develop an understanding of the type of exercise they need to promote optimal health, and participate in an adequate number of minutes of activities to reach their desired level of fitness. Lifetime activities are explored as a means by which students can maintain their health over the course of their lives.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Science Education
Science is much more than learning about rocks or biological processes or the speed of light. The processes students use to understand scientific concepts promote the development of strong analytical and problem solving skills that will last them a lifetime. Scientific investigations help students to see things logically. Evidence gathering is an important process for proving or disproving hypotheses, which facilitates the acquisition of strong evaluative skills. Scientific studies help learners become somewhat of a skeptic, not accepting something at face value but taking measures to find evidence to support what they see or hear. These skills are applicable in other academic pursuits as well, from math and social studies to English and art, and promote greater success in those subjects.
