Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lambton Shores District Curriculum

The goal of the curriculum in English is for students to develop their abilities to interpret and evaluate information and through their History classes students gain in conceptual knowledge about history, civic institutions, economics, and cultural matters. Math and Science teach a host of advanced thinking skills like relational thinking, process-oriented thinking, logical and deductive reasoning, and hones students skills in precision and accuracy. Students options for learning a new language exist during the elementary and secondary years and impart a range of translational thinking skills.

In addition to core academics, the districts offer students advanced learning opportunities in the Dual Language Programs, International Baccalaureate, High Skills Majors, and as the needs develop, more programs can be added into the curricular options. With these options, students have the means to become prepared to enter the global and technology-driven workplace.

Lambton Shores District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools in Lambton Shores follow the Ontario Curriculum which is rigorous in terms of its focus on core academics and adaptable in the enrichment and specialized programs which are also offered. Each subject has a framework for learning that details the grade-level expectations for educational achievement and which is used to plan teaching and to design accurate assessments that reflect student learning. The core academic subjects of English, History, Languages, Math, and Science are all designed to teach content knowledge, key concepts and principles within the subjects, and to provide the means for higher-order thinking. The curriculum also details what students at the elementary and secondary levels are expected to focus on and uses the elementary framework to support the more in-depth learning during high school.

We currently cover the following Lambton Shores-area school districts: Lambton Kent District School Board, St. Clair Catholic District School Board.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for Emergencies in Schools

Thankfully, emergencies are unlikely to happen frequently in schools, but it is still vital that students and teachers be prepared in the event they happen. The preparedness activity that is practiced most frequently in schools is the fire drill. This involves students quickly yet calmly exiting the school via their designated emergency exit and lining up in an area around--but not too close to--the school. Once outside, teachers take attendance to make sure all are accounted for; this is the only talking that should occur. Students and teachers generally stand outside for a few minutes until their principal allows them to go back into the school. Although fire routes are posted in each classroom, fire drills give students and staff a chance to practice taking their route and remaining calm while doing so.
