The Standards present a logical progression for learning within each subject, offering benchmarks that can be measured to ensure that students are reaching the standards. The emphasis on technology has also increased in recent years and students have a wider variety of course options in the subject and the curriculum is regularly updated to incorporate new technologies.

We currently cover the following Leesburg-area school district: Loudon County Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leesburg District Curriculum

The Reading curriculum begins with students gaining an understanding of the phonetic principles, such as identifying the upper case and lower case letters. They can then use these principles to help them identify words and to help them expand their vocabulary. This skill allows them to explore the literature of different cultures and prepare to take classes such as etymology, journalism or fundamentals of writing.

Students begin studying Social Studies in kindergarten as they learn the meaning of words such as yesterday, or a long time ago. They also become familiar with famous people that they will learn more about as they go through school. Students learn how to find continents and oceans by using cardinal directions and the four hemispheres before they enter middle school. By graduation, they can take one area that they have an interest in and study it more in depth. The areas they can choose from include history, economics, psychology, and world religions.

Chalk Talk: Important Terms Each Kindergarten Parent Should Know

When a student begins kindergarten, parents feel like they are thrown into a new world, a world filled with words they may not understand. For example, teachers may talk about modeling. This is another word for the process for teaching something by demonstrating, like when a teacher moves a finger across a page while reading. Another term is assessment, which means the way that a teacher gauges the progress of the children. These assessments can be based on the standards and benchmarks which is the basis of comparison for the student, generally set by the state or school district. One of these benchmarks includes phonemic awareness or the sounds that a letter makes. High frequency words, or sight words, are words that are used frequently in print, such as the word “the”. With a basic understanding of these words parents may not be as confused when their little ones enter this next adventure.
