Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Loveland District Curriculum

The middle school math curriculum in Loveland focuses on bridging the basic concepts children learn in elementary school with the advanced concepts they learn in high school. Learners acquire an understanding of ratios and proportional relationships, including how to use ratios to solve problems. The number system is explored, with students learning to divide fractions, compute with multi-digit numbers, and find common factors. Students learn how to reason with one-variable equations and inequalities as well.

High school science students in Loveland have the opportunity to take part in a comprehensive study of the biological sciences. Students learn about heredity, including the structure of DNA cells, genetics, and mutations. Evolution is explored, with students gaining a deeper understanding of the processes of natural selection, genetic drift, and gene flow. Learners examine cells as well, and identify the structure, function, and interrelatedness of cell organelles. Classification systems are also studied. Students learn the value of having an organizational system that can compartmentalize and describe the vast diversity that exists in the living world.

Chalk Talk: Technology Expands Learning Space

Students today have a greater opportunity to tap into knowledge than ever before. Many school districts recognize that technology is the key to expand learning space for students, and have implemented initiatives to add more technology to classrooms. Other districts have gone a step further and provided tablets or laptops to their students. These efforts to integrate technology allow children to access a wealth of information on the Internet. Students can conduct research at school or at home. They can interact with other students across the state, nation, and the world. Learners can access online encyclopedias, literature reviews, historical documents, videos and images, and a host of other materials that facilitate a deeper understanding of the topics they study at school. By giving students the ability to expand their learning time beyond the school day, school districts foster a greater depth of knowledge and understanding of the topics under study.
