Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lower Burrell District Curriculum
The primary curriculum in Kindergarten through Grade 3 focuses on literacy skills, with the expectation that students will be able to achieve Reading/Language Arts objectives by the end of Grade 3. Math is taught using manipulative materials, following Pennsylvania Core State Standards. Middle school programs provide more depth and breadth of knowledge. All students are required to complete an individual project in order to graduate from high school.
The high school curriculum seeks to integrate knowledge, increase connections, and enable analytic thinking across areas of learning. As part of their challenging curriculum in English, Math, Social Sciences, and Science, the Lower Burrell School District offers dual enrollment with a local college, so that students get college credit as well as high school credit in courses including Biology, Computer Science, English, Math, Psychology, and Sociology. In addition, students have the option to take Advanced Placement courses in a number of subjects.

- Science and Math Programs for Girls - Fifth-grade girls in the Burrell School District have a unique opportunity to prepare for future careers in science and math fields. They can become part of the GEMS Club, short for Girls Excelling in Math and Science. The club meets after school, and hopes to include fourth-grade girls in their activities soon.
- Essay Contest on Constitution - A high school student from Lower Burrell won first place in a VFW essay contest about why the US Constitution is important. In his essay, he discussed about the role the Constitution plays in everyday lives and in current events.
- The Role of the PSAT - At Burrell High School, all students take the PSAT, not just those who hope to qualify for National Merit Scholarships. Counselors require students to prepare for the test and take it as valuable practice. They also find out weaknesses, strengths, and the subject areas they will need to focus on before they go on to college.
