Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lynnfield District Curriculum

In the language learning programs, to address everyday tasks, students issue verbal instructions to other students in a non-dominant language, and do so with clarity and focus such that other students can appropriately complete the task. Doing so promotes the development of the use of appropriate inflections, pacing, and gestures when speaking to others. Cultural studies are part of the curriculum as well. Students learn about various traditions and customs that make the cultures associated with the language under study unique and interesting.

Unique course offerings include Business and Personal Law, Survey of Irish Literature, The Rise of the Female Novelist, Self-Discovery Through Philosophy and Film, Hamlet: The Original Troubled Youth, Race and Identity, Sports in Literature, Nutrition, Mariachi Band, and others. The high school offers courses in Honors, AP, and CP (College Prep). Lynnfield High was recognized as a gold medal-school in the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of the Best High Schools.

Some schools choose to hold a week-long spring break, while others may give students two or three days off around Easter time. Students and teachers usually get three days off (Thursday, Friday, and Monday) for Thanksgiving. Students will have always have off for Labor Day and Memorial Day and may have off for President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Veteran's Day, and Columbus Day; although, these days can be used as make-up days. Some of these days may be used as in-service days for teachers. Calendars will also list non-holiday in-service days during which students have off as well as pre-planned half-days and two-hour delays. Calendars can always be changed, as days may need to be made up.
