Chalk Talk: Helping a Child Cope With Frustration

Every child can feel a sense of frustration when faced with something new. There are a few things that parents can do to help alleviate this feeling in children. First, when a child appears frustrated, stay calm. It is important that a parent does not reflect frustration in their own mannerisms. Instead, talk calmly with a child and try to get the child to mimic you. Present the child with some challenges that are just a little beyond what they usually do. When they begin to struggle, do not jump in but give them hints to make the situation easier. Next, encourage the child to be independent by supplying times where they can play with others without close supervision. Make sure the children are safe put otherwise let them solve problems themselves. This allows then to deal with frustration on their own, instead of having to turn to adults for assistance. If the child still shows frustration about school situations, set up a time to talk with the teacher to find other ways to help.
