Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Manchester District Curriculum

In elementary school, English Language Arts strives to differentiate and engage all students in order to create literacy in reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. They focus on grasping fundamental skills in writing and reading comprehension to create a solid foundation that is built upon year after year. At the high school level, advanced courses promote the analytic, critical thinking and research skills students are expected to develop and demonstrate.

Mathematics, at all grade levels, reduces the number of topics to focus on numeracy, geometry, data analysis, and algebra to allow students time to deepen their understanding before moving on to the next grade level. This creates students who have a much better subject understanding. The philosophy applies to Science as well where critical thinking and analytic skills are encouraged. Students are introduced to the scientific process, are asked to think about how technology impacts society, and learn how to test and verify hypotheses.

Chalk Talk: Importance of Volunteering

Many parents overlook the incredible impact volunteering can have for their children. When children participate in any volunteering program and witness their parents volunteering too, they begin to see that others in this world do not necessarily live the way that they do. It can be humbling for everyone involved. Whether is helping a fundraiser, feeding animals at the local animal shelter, or working in a soup kitchen, getting your kid involved in something connects them to their community and helps them grow as individuals. They gain insight and are more likely to be empathetic and appreciative and will incorporate the lessons learned into their daily life.
