Maquoketa District and Curriculum

Maquoketa Community School District serves approximately 1,325 students in four schools. The district follows the Iowa Core Standards which has a series of comprehensive learning objectives in math, science, literacy, social studies, and 21st century skills. All subject areas require that students develop a strong base of knowledge and then compound it with analytic, reasoning, and other critical thinking skills. The high school also offers Advanced Placement courses for students prepared for college level work. Maquoketa greatly emphasizes forming partnerships with families in order to help prepare students for success in a 21st century global society.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Maquoketa District Curriculum

Maquoketa Community School District has posted curriculum maps for each grade level and content area. Middle school teachers have spent ample time undergoing professional development in preparation for this iniative. The teachers use the characteristics of effective instruction and concept-based instruction in their teaching. The Iowa Core Standards emphasize that the concepts students learn have deep meaning, be relevant to their lives, and develop essential 21st century learning skills.

The maps explain the content students are learning, the skills students are expected to acquire, the assessments that are implemented, and the resources that are used. Maquoketa Middle School has incorporated a Literacy Initiative on the heels of student improvement in English language arts and the implementation of the Iowa Core Standards. The initiative includes a double-block of reading and language arts instruction, intensive intervention for students who are not proficient, and the implementation of the Wonders curriculum in sixth grade.

Keeping Informed: Recent Maquoketa Center Educational News

  • Maquoketa Teacher Volunteers in Haiti - It has been five years since an earthquake led to a catastrophe in Haiti, but the country is still feeling its effects, so 20 people from the QCA, including a Maquoketa teacher, took a volunteer trip there to help. Teacher Jane Schmidt described the experience as “wonderfully horrible or terribly wonderful” and dicussed how, while there, the group experienced the death of two children and the birth of two babies all in the same day. Many of the volunteers helped train Haitian teachers during the trip.
  • Hundreds Send Off Maquoketa Teacher in Patriotic Ceremony - Over 400 people attended a send-off ceremony for art teacher Shaela Bresnan, who was about to be deployed in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army Reserve. The event, which was organized by Maquoketa High’s Club hope, included patriotic cheers, a Skype visit from her brother, and her father’s first opportunity to see his daughter in uniform. Bresnan thanked the school district profusely and said that the school community is what she fights for. Students praised her for being different than an average teacher and being very involved with the students.
  • Maquoketa Alum Gets His Shot With NFL Team - Former Maquoketa High football player Tyler Rutenbeck, who also played Division III football at the University of Dubuque, signed as an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Rutenbeck played four sports at Maquoketa High and was a first team all-district selection in his senior year.

Chalk Talk: Children’s Literature Spotlight: Rhyming

Rhyming is an important skill for young children to acquire, and it can be learned with the help of various children’s books. Dr. Seuss’s books are known for including rhyme. Hop and Pop is a simple, repetitive story for early readers that exposes children to a variety of rhyming sounds. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish is a rhyming book that allows children to become familiar with numbers, colors, and objects. It includes humorous fictional characters with matching pictures. Rhyme-a-Round, written and illustrated by Justine Smith, not only includes rhymes and songs, but also allows children to feel different textures. This is a great way for children to increase their vocabulary as well.
