Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Maquoketa District Curriculum

Maquoketa Community School District has posted curriculum maps for each grade level and content area. Middle school teachers have spent ample time undergoing professional development in preparation for this iniative. The teachers use the characteristics of effective instruction and concept-based instruction in their teaching. The Iowa Core Standards emphasize that the concepts students learn have deep meaning, be relevant to their lives, and develop essential 21st century learning skills.

The maps explain the content students are learning, the skills students are expected to acquire, the assessments that are implemented, and the resources that are used. Maquoketa Middle School has incorporated a Literacy Initiative on the heels of student improvement in English language arts and the implementation of the Iowa Core Standards. The initiative includes a double-block of reading and language arts instruction, intensive intervention for students who are not proficient, and the implementation of the Wonders curriculum in sixth grade.
