Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Marinette District Curriculum

As part of Marinette’s science curriculum, elementary school students learn about the essential features of conducting scientific investigations. Students learn how to ask appropriate questions when exploring scientific topics in order to enhance their understanding of the topic. Learners gain a familiarity with various models and explanations for scientific phenomena as well. Data collection procedures are reviewed, and students learn how to determine which method of collecting data is most appropriate for the task at hand.

Wisconsin’s social studies curriculum includes an in-depth study of the behavioral sciences. In high school, students explore topics such as family dynamics, faith, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and religion, and how each influences the development of a person’s identity and sense of self. Students also explore various social and cultural groups, citing the ways in which each group is defined and identifying how those definitions change with time. The processes of cultural assimilation and cultural preservation are explored as well, with learners identifying issues of importance for ethnic and racial groups in Wisconsin and the United States.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College Major

Choosing one’s area of study in college is a breeze for some students, while others struggle to identify the career path they wish to take. While it is nice to be able to enter college as a freshman with a major already selected, it is not a prerequisite. For students that aren’t sure what they want to study, taking a semester or two to explore various options might help make the decision easier. This gives students the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes and determine what does and does not interest them. Asking questions of peers, classmates, and professors may also help students determine what major best fits their aptitudes and interests. If further assistance is needed, many colleges and universities have counseling centers where students can take interest inventories. Data from these tests can inform a student about their strengths, weaknesses, and vocational-related interests.
