Chalk Talk: The Importance of Breakfast

High school students are in such a rush all the time, and the time and effort needed to devote to a nutritious breakfast came seem too valuable to waste sitting and eating, but research has shown that a nutritious breakfast has lasting benefits. It doesn’t have to be anything too elaborate; a bowl of cereal or some toast and peanut butter can be enough to ‘wake up’ a student’s metabolism in the morning. On test days, before presentations, and even just on regular class days, research has shown that students perform much better when they have a balanced breakfast. This is especially important considering the fact that many high school students have incurred a sleep debt by spending long hours studying…or doing other things. Students who haven’t had a nutritious breakfast are easily distracted, fidgety, and generally perform worse than those who have.
