Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Meridian District Curriculum

Meridian’s Social Studies curriculum begins as students are introduced to the tools that they are going to use throughout their education. Tools such as time lines, globes, graphs, and maps become an important part of these children’s journey through social studies. These tools are expanded when students discover how to use compasses, graphs, technology and grid. Students use primary sources, such as the Declaration of Independence, which helps students analyze social and political changes in the United States and the world.

The Science curriculum begins when the children learn about the earth, including the differences between the landforms and the bodies of water. By eighth grade, they break items down into cells, including the study of bacteria and viruses, and they study how each of these have an impact on human life. In high school, students learn about physical science, including the study of the atoms and forces of motion, chemistry, where they study topics like atomic bonding and nuclear structure, and biology, and its discussion of animal and plant cells.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Help in a Classroom

Quite often teachers need another set of arms, or more hours in the day to accomplish what they would like to do. Parents are often the answer to this problem. Whether it is organizing an area of the room, helping a child with reading, helping with a bulletin board, or cutting figures out at home, the help is often appreciated. This allows the teacher to spend more time teaching, while resting assured that all the students’ needs are being attended to.
