Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Merrill District Curriculum

The Math curriculum provides students with a well-rounded basis in problem-solving in areas such as numerical operations, geometry, algebra and advanced math topics such as trigonometry and pre-calculus. Data analysis is also a significant part of the math curriculum and students learn how to interpret and represent data. Fractions are also a part of the curriculum. Students add and subtract fractions, as well as multiply and divide them. Learners also acquire an understanding of base ten, including how to perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers.

Merrill’s curriculum includes an introduction to financial literacy for high school students. Credit and debt management is a primary area of learning in the financial literacy curriculum. Students learn how to identify and evaluate various credit products and services, including credit cards and bank loans. The pitfalls of taking on too much credit are discussed, as are the resulting penalties if one is unable to stay current on their credit payments. Learners explore interest rates, fees, and various other charges that are incurred when credit is used in order to develop a clearer picture of the actual cost of utilizing credit for purchases.

Chalk Talk: How Sports Can Improve Your Child’s Grades

Playing sports offer a whole host of benefits for students of all ages. Getting involved in physical activity is an excellent way for your child to improve their physical health. Sports also give students a healthy outlet for reducing stress, which leads to improved mental health. Participating in athletics has academic benefits as well. Sports require students to manage their time effectively and prioritize tasks. These skills are critical for success in school as kids must be able to take on various projects at the same time. Because of attendance requirements in order to participate in sports, athletes tend to have excellent attendance. With more days in class, student-athletes are able to perform better on assignments and exams. As a result, many athletes have excellent grades over the course of their participation in school sports.
