Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monroe District Curriculum

Union County Public School System is committed to excellence in the classroom that creates excellence in its graduates. Curriculum is, of course, a key component in the education of students, and UCPS is confident that the rigor and relevance of their education will pay big dividends, whether students are going to further their studies or are going straight into the workforce.

The Math curriculum offers classes beyond Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. The Future Ready course of study allows students to choose from Discrete Mathematics, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus to further challenge themselves and prepare for college. Within the lower grades, practices and concepts such as quantitative and abstract reasoning, proportional relationships, and geometrical constructions, as well as rational and irrational numbers prepare students for the advanced thinking required of the Future Ready courses.

Chalk Talk: Simple Memory Devices

Do more than simply memorize facts—have fun thinking up creative ways to remember things; you’ll remember them longer! Use acronyms to commit to memory lists of things, like HOMES for the names of the Great Lakes: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, and Superior. In music, a sentence helps us remember the notes on the lines of the treble clef: Every Good Boy Does Fine = EGBDF. Crazy sentences, or even songs, can help us remember all kinds of information. Studying for chemistry class? Set the names of the elements to a tune which is easy to remember!
