Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mount Vernon District Curriculum

The math curriculum focuses its learning on numeracy, operational sense, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. In geometry, students work with basic geometric principles, such as finding the area of a circle, triangle, or quadrilateral. Students also learn how to draw and construct geometric shapes and describe those shapes with appropriate detail as well. Descriptive statistics are explored as well. Students learn how to summarize, interpret, communicate about, and represent data.

The Language Arts curriculum gives equal focus to reading fiction and non-fiction, and also teaches students a variety of styles and purposes for which to write. Students explore how authors utilize setting to facilitate the growth and development of characters. The structure and craft of literary works is studied as well. Students identify specific passages in the text and explain how they contribute to the overall theme and plot of the book. This gives them the basis for finding evidence to support their claims which is emphasized in the curriculum.

Chalk Talk: Learning Math in the Kitchen

Cooking with a child is a great way to introduce math concepts like fractions and time, but there are also a great many other lessons children can get out of cooking either at home or in school. Classes about meal preparation can teach students about sustainability, gardening, and the environment. Putting together a meal takes planning, and can hone students’ discreet math skills. In addition to this abstract math ability, students can learn more about fractions and conversions through basic recipes. Baking teaches students about the basic compositions of essential foods, as well as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, home economics-type courses help students prepare to care for themselves and their future families. Whether a school offers a course of this caliber or not, parents can perform simple cooking tasks with children of all ages. Not only does it teach them so many skills, but it is fun and a good excuse to spend time together.
