Classes about meal preparation can teach students about sustainability, gardening, and the environment. Putting together a meal takes planning, and can hone students’ discreet math skills. In addition to this abstract math ability, students can learn more about fractions and conversions through basic recipes. Baking teaches students about the basic compositions of essential foods, as well as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, home economics-type courses help students prepare to care for themselves and their future families. Whether a school offers a course of this caliber or not, parents can perform simple cooking tasks with children of all ages. Not only does it teach them so many skills, but it is fun and a good excuse to spend time together.
