Chalk Talk: Why Studying History Is Important

History is an important topic for students to learn and understand because it gives insight into the past, while also allowing students to predict what lies in store in the future. Students examine patterns of human behavior over the centuries, which allows them to draw conclusions about choices and decisions that humankind makes that are both beneficial and detrimental to society, politics, culture, and the environment. By studying events of the past, students are able to develop a framework within which they can understand and make sense of the world. Rather than viewing history as something that happened long ago, this allows students to see history as a constantly evolving phenomenon. History also gives insight into other peoples, societies, and traditions, which facilitates improved cultural understanding and facilitates empathy for others. In this regard, studying history teaches discernment and allows students to learn from the mistakes and triumphs of others.
