Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Iberia District Curriculum

Louisiana is implementing the Common Core Curriculum in all district schools. The curriculum is expected to help all students have the same high educational level of students across the United States. The focus is on reading, writing, and math skills and the development of independent thinking and critical analysis skills. In English and Language Arts, students learn to read, write, speak and listen using correct English. In preparation for the workforce, students read informational text which they could encounter on the job.

In Mathematics, students focus on a finite number of subjects including computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The goal is for students to be mathematically literate by the time they graduate from high school with skills they can apply in the workforce and in college. Also, they should be able to use their math in abstract or logical reasoning tasks.
