Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Iberia District Curriculum
Louisiana is implementing the Common Core Curriculum in all district schools. The curriculum is expected to help all students have the same high educational level of students across the United States. The focus is on reading, writing, and math skills and the development of independent thinking and critical analysis skills. In English and Language Arts, students learn to read, write, speak and listen using correct English. In preparation for the workforce, students read informational text which they could encounter on the job.
In Mathematics, students focus on a finite number of subjects including computational skills, algebra, geometry, statistics, measurement and proportional reasoning. The goal is for students to be mathematically literate by the time they graduate from high school with skills they can apply in the workforce and in college. Also, they should be able to use their math in abstract or logical reasoning tasks.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.

Chalk Talk: Bill Nye the Science Guy
Teachers and parents looking for help in making science fun for kids need look no further than the site put together by Bill Nye. Bill Nye the unique standup scientist who has combined both comedy and science into a profession offers all kinds of science fun on his website billnye.com. There are instructions for demonstrating scientific subjects covering life science, chemistry, physics, earth science and space science. You can demonstrate the properties behind wind and air with Nye’s A Wing and Some Air project, and demonstrate oil in action while making art with a project to create marbled paper. Move Mountains project shows students how the tectonic plates collided to make mountains and using just a rubber band or rubber balloon students can learn about how energy produces heat. A great site to find simple experiments that will make learning science fun.
