Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Olmsted District Curriculum

The curriculum is based on individualized instruction with process-based learning and authentic assessment with integrated learning across the curriculum. Computer and Science labs offer students opportunities for experiential learning. A vital part of the curriculum includes supportive teachers who nurture their students' learning and help them develop a passion for applying their studies.

The English Language Arts curriculum of Olmsted aims to increase students' proficiency in reading comprehension by using a balanced literacy approach and focusing on strategies for comprehension. The Math curriculum challenges students to solve problems using geometry, measurement, algebra while enforcing flexibility and patterns of logic in their thinking and ways of relating to the world. As students enter high school, courses such as public speaking and debate enable students to practice their argumentative and critical thinking skills and reasoning on topics that pose moral controversy in our world today.

Chalk Talk: Programs for Gifted Learners

Our vast curriculum includes core standards and benchmarks for average students but the most exceptional curriculums tailor specific programs and skills in alignment with the gifted. Most of Ohio's schools strongly consider extracurricular activities, clubs, programs, challenging placement courses and exams to help the gifted excel but also stimulate their curiosity for lifelong learning. The key for gifted students is to enable them to learn but to keep challenging them to prevent boredom. When students are bored, they do not learn and they stop growing. This is why schools aim to tailor to different needs of students in academics and athletics. Students who are gifted in one area such as the arts may lack in others such as math or sciences. While gifted students need to be encouraged to use their talents, expand on their skills they also need to be inspired to challenge their weaker subjects.
