Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Orion Township District Curriculum

Elementary students attend one of seven elementary schools, including one that uses a year-round calendar, a multiage school, and a performing arts school. All of these options allow students to discover what type of learner they are at a young age. The curriculum in elementary school focuses on building a strong educational base in the subjects of Reading, Writing, and Math. Teachers use the Developmental Reading Assessment to determine a student’s reading level and tailor the instruction to suit that level. Students also have the Math IXL program available to them starting in elementary school which is an online tool used both in school and at home.

Students in middle school are taught using a team approach in which a group of students are taught by a team of teachers who collaborate and work together on a daily basis. This fosters a safe and supported learning environment for students. This program in accentuated by the Student Teacher Affective Relationship, or STAR, program which focuses on fostering a mutually respectful relationship between teachers and students.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare for High-Stakes Testing

Over the last fifteen years, the nation’s school districts have shifted their focus to end-of-year standardized testing, also known as high-stakes testing. This one day of testing can be stressful for students, parents, and teachers. There are several steps you can take to prepare your student for high-stakes testing. First, set up a good study system at the beginning of the year, these are not the type of tests that can be studied for overnight. Secondly, make sure your student gets enough sleep the night before. An overly tired student may make simple mistakes or rush through the test. Next, prepare a nutritious breakfast that will sustain him or her throughout the test. Foods high in protein and fiber will keep them feeling full and able to focus on the test. Last, and most importantly, relax and remind your student that they have been working towards this test all year and they are prepared. A little boost of confidence can help to calm those test day jitters.
