Palos Hills District and Curriculum

The schools follow the Illinois Common Core Curriculum, which are internationally benchmarked, research-based standards, intended to provide a rigorous, equal education regardless of a student’s economic or social background, race, gender, or learning style. The school offers a safe environment. Students learn to treat themselves and others with respect and work within groups to achieve their goals while accepting constructive criticism. Students will be equipped to challenge the future, as knowledgeable people who comprehend and can use a core body of knowledge and skills across curricula and who take responsibility for their own learning.

We currently cover the following Palos Hills-area school districts: Consolidated HSD 230 and North Palos SD 117.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Palos Hills District Curriculum

It is hoped that students will become life-long learners who are easily capable of using critical and analytical thinking to solve problems. In humanities classes, students read for comprehension and synthesis and gather evidence to support their claims. Students also become communicators capable of careful observation, effective communication, both written and spoken, aware of their audience, and able to demonstrate good listening skills.

Students are expected to become invested in their own education and demonstrate a commitment to establish, meet, and exceed goals and monitor their own progress through self-evaluation. In order to help prepare them for the future, students should also be able to use resources and technology effectively. To this end, career-oriented courses are available for students at the high school level so that they may specialize in areas they plan to pursue.

Chalk Talk: How Important Are Essays and Recommendations?

A student’s college application is a big pile of paper. Usually, there isn’t even a picture of the student to go along with it. It’s just paper and numbers and data. That means it’s really easy to get lost in the shuffle, which means it’s vitally important for applicants to differentiate themselves from other applicants. The transcript and test scores might make a student stand out, data-wise, but they don’t really humanize the student. That’s where essays come in. A college essay shouldn’t be a listing of accomplishments; rather, it should be an opportunity for the student to share his/her personality with the admissions staff. Humor, passion, maturity, and so many other positive qualities can be communicated through the college essay. Recommendation, likewise, give insight on the student that the student might not be able to share him/herself. Teachers will write about class performance but will also share personal qualities of the student which can help transform an applicant from a pile or paper to a human being.
