Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Paola District Curriculum

Paolo Unified School District’s curriculum follows the Kansas College and Career Standards to ensure a quality education to all students and a rigorous educational environment that empowers each individual with the skills necessary to become a productive citizen in the global community. The curriculum designates both big picture goals and the specific skills and knowledge that students should be picking up each year. The literacy goals are woven into all subjects so that students can critically read texts in any subject.

The curriculum also emphasizes critical thinking and reading skills, analytical writing, and science literacy. Communication and problem solving skills are also taught. Research skills that involve using library resources such as reference material and academic databases are also taught in many subjects. Students also learn how to properly cite and reference the works of other authors. Students who take an engaged role in their education will be well-prepared for the challenges they will face in post-secondary education or the workforce.

Chalk Talk: Tips for the SAT and the ACT

Most colleges require standardized testing, and they’ll take both or either the SAT or the ACT. Many colleges will also consider multiple sessions, and pull the best scores from each. This is called Super Scoring. So, a student might take the SAT once and do really well in Reading, and take it again and do well in Math. The college will take the best score from each time and use that to average the total grade. Many will also do this for the ACT, though very few will average the two tests together. The tests are similar, but there are differences. The ACT has a science section, and the math is generally considered to be more difficult. The essay is at the beginning of the SAT and the end of the ACT, and the ACT even has the option of students not writing the essay. Colleges require the essay, but if a student has taken it before and done well, this can be a time—and brain—saver.
