Petal District and Curriculum
Petal School District aims at developing students that are prepared to face an ever-changing world. They do this by following the Common Core State Standards that are set by the Mississippi Department of Education. The curriculum is built around key strands of learning within each topic, allowing students to build their understanding within the different subjects over the years.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Petal District Curriculum
The ability to create clear, concise writing begins in kindergarten in Petal schools’ Language Arts program. Children begin by telling others their thoughts clearly as they go through each grade this is expanded upon in various ways. They are soon able to complete short research projects in groups and by themselves. When students reach high school, they are able to use the previous skills and create logical arguments that are supported by evidence.
Mathematics is also introduced, in Petal schools, in its basic form from the early years where students begin by acting out addition and subtraction problems. Then the students are introduced to numbers and functions such as decimals, positive and negative numbers, exponents, square root and cubed root as well as scientific notation. When students graduate, they have built their mathematical skill-level to the point they are able to work with rational and irrational numbers with ease.

Keeping Informed: Recent Petal Educational News
- Teacher of the Year - Several teachers have been honored at the Technology/Best Practices Summit, by being named Teacher of the Year. Each of these educators was awarded with a cash award and one of them will now be entered in the Mississippi Teacher of the Year competition.
- Art Exhibition - Petal Schools held an art exhibit recently. Parents were invited to look at all of the artwork while enjoying refreshments. The public was invited to join over the weekend.
- Show Choir - The Petal Show choir held a dinner theater for 1,000 guests. They served a French inspired dinner and then the Soundsations and Innovations Competition Shows performed. These groups will be participating in competitions throughout the state.

They provide a starting point for learning that allows families and educators to make sure that students will do well. They can also provide a teacher with a heads-up when a student may need extra assistance or when they may need more of a challenge.
