Philadelphia District and Curriculum

The Philadelphia Public Schools help students excel in the ever changing world. The three schools are accredited with the Mississippi Department of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The frameworks outline the knowledge and concepts that students are expected to master in their courses.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Philadelphia District Curriculum

The Philadelphia schools have state-of-the art science laboratories which are used to help students become scientists in their own worlds. This begins as the children learn broad areas such as life-cycles and then by middle school the topics are narrowed down to areas such as earthquakes, and energy. This prepares students to go more in-depth when they enter high school. At this stage, they can focus on areas like physical science, chemistry or biology.

Mathematics at the Philadelphia schools begins with basics such as learning to count to one hundred out loud and how to add and subtract up to 10. They progress through perimeters, money and time. In high school, they take these skills and learn algebra and other advanced mathematics so when they graduate they can solve the problems and communicate their methods for doing so. Mathematic literacy is a central part of the curriculum and students are expected to have communication abilities in math thought.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for the PSAT

Many high school students become stressed when they think of the tests they need to take in order to be accepted into college. The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) is one of these tests. To prepare for this test students just need to pay attention to their teachers in class because this test covers the knowledge that has been obtained in school. If a student has learned how to take notes completed their homework and has keep up on lessons, they will do fine on the test. If the student still feels like they need further preparation, there are books on how to prepare for the PSAT which help to review with the student the knowledge that they have already learned. The repetition that the book gives can be calming for some students. Just remember, before the test, take a deep breath and relax.
