Chalk Talk: What Is Early Decision II?

Early Decision is a binding, early application. This means that students apply typically by November 1st and agree that they will attend this college if accepted. So they can only apply to one college with Early Decision at a time. Colleges tend to send a decision within a month with Early Decision, so what does a student do if s/he isn’t accepted? Well, now, s/he is released from the contract and is no longer “bound” to attend that college. Early Decision II is a way colleges have developed to capitalize on this. It’s essentially Early Decision with a later due-date, so students can once again have the possibility of the benefits of Early Decision at a different school. Typically, Early Decision II is offered by second tier schools, but bear in mind that these are often still very selective. The due date for Early Decision II is often mid-January, so students have to scramble to get those applications done.
