Chalk Talk: The Importance of Community Service
The value of serving one’s community is something that many K-12 children experience at some point. More and more districts are adopting community service as a requirement for graduation, and those that haven’t still encourage their students to make a positive difference in their community. Such activities offer students many advantages. Community service helps forge a bond between students and the community at large. This can help narrow the gulf between children that are typically isolated from the community by spending their days on a closed school campus. Additionally, community service promotes a sense of citizenship and pride. Students also benefit in the academic realm. Service projects engage kids in addressing problems, managing their time, and thinking critically. All of these skills are necessary for success in and outside of the classroom.
