Red Hook District and Curriculum
The Red Hook Central School District (RHCSD) serves approximately 2,000 students from kindergarten to grade twelve. The RHCSD does not offer preschool, although district officials keep in regular contact with local pre-schools to collaborate with local preschools. The RHCSD creates its curriculum to align with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). To prepare students for the technological skills of the 21st century, the district uses the Dutchess County BOCES Model Schools Program to design its technology education curriculum.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Red Hook District Curriculum
The curriculum from kindergarten to grade eight focuses on nurturing academic, social, and emotional needs. Students receive instruction in core academic subjects, while participating in exploratory courses to foster creativity. In addition to core subjects, middle school students have access to courses in foreign language, consumer science, music, art, physical education, technology, and special education.
Instruction at Red Hook High School (RHHS) highlights college and/or career preparedness. Students have many options to create personalized four-year plans to include courses in English language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, physical education, art, languages other than English, and music. Students also have access to advanced placement (AP) courses and a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program in collaboration with Project Lead The Way. RHHS graduation requirements meet the NYSED guidelines.

- Red Hook High Student Receives Scholarship for Excellence - Students who graduate in the top 10 percent, from schools within Dutchess County, will receive two years paid tuition to attend Dutchess Community College (DCC). One of this year’s 27 recipients is a Red Hook High School 2014 graduate.
- Red Hook Teachers Earn Academic Accolades - Red Hook Central School District school psychologist, Sal Massa, has earned recognition as a Diplomate from the American Board of Professional Psychology. Massa is one of only 87 school psychologists, nationwide, to earn this post-doctoral certificate. Additionally, a RHCSD math teacher, Debbie Mosher, recently received recognition as a New York State Master Teacher.
- ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ Comes to Red Hook - The Red Hook High School spring musical, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, was a success for student actors and musicians. Many talented students brought this play to life, with the help of the RHHS orchestra, and music teacher and keyboardist, Brian Zeller.

Children who live and learn in a music-rich environment will benefit in many ways. Lyrical lessons can help children to understand the rhythm of languages, as well as producing their own sounds. Listening to the rhythm of music can also help children to develop physical coordination. Young children are exploring their kinesthetic abilities, and music gives them an outlet to define and refine their movements. As children get older, they can differentiate better between tempo, pitch, and tone. These qualities can help them understand symbolic representations, such as mood and context. When children have the ability to read music, they not only can learn to play instruments more proficiently, but they also improve counting skills. Music can improve their appreciation for arts and humanities. Giving children exposure to music at home and in school can give them countless advantages.
