By high school, students begin to have more options which tie in to potential career goals and allow them to either specialize their education or take a more generalized approach. Chalk Talk: What Is Curriculum Design?

Curriculum design is a part of the educational process where educators and other stakeholders determine how the curriculum should be organized and what skills and knowledge students should attain. Some curriculum are designed in a progressive manner, whereby learning follows certain major strands. For instance, in Math, students focus on the topics of numeracy and operational ability, algebraic thinking, geometry and measurement, and data analysis. The design of the curriculum is to teach all of these in a way that develops the basics in young learners and then compounds the learning each year until they reach the ability to do more advanced work. The goal of curriculum design is also to ensure that all subject learning follows the same type of framework, giving coherence to the whole educational process.
