Chalk Talk: Preparing A Child for a New School

Whether due to promotion or a family move, most children face changing schools sometime during their education. Adjusting to a new school can be a tense time for children and parents but it can be made easier with a little help from the parents. Before the child begins attending the new school, remind them of the ways they have made friends in the past. This may be by showing an interest, talking about hobbies or smiling. Another thing the child can do is to become involved. Parents should find out what clubs or teams interest the child, this is a way to open a door to belonging. Parents can also share with the child what to expect in the new school. How it may be similar or different from the school they came from. Most of all, parents need to keep the doors of communication open to see if there are other ways they can help.
