Chalk Talk: Benefits of Hands-On Learning

Likely the greatest benefit of hands-on learning is that it facilitates greater retention of the material. If students are able to interact with the material under study in an engaging manner, they will remember much more and will have a deeper level of understanding as well. This method of learning is particularly beneficial in courses that require the use of technology or other equipment, such as in the sciences and vocational education. Hands-on learning affords students the opportunity to be active in the learning process as well. This lends to the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are necessary for success in education, work and life in general. Experiential learning environments also prepare students for the world of work. Particularly in vocational education classrooms, students take part in learning activities that closely mirror what real-life work will be like.
