Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sharonville District Curriculum

Part of the Sharonville curriculum is the study of English language arts. Within this curricular area, students work on acquiring the ability to effectively read literature. In middle school, students learn how to read critically and analyze inferences made in the text. Children learn to identify the central theme of the text and analyze how setting and plot facilitate character development. Learners examine the dialogue of a text to determine how specific lines or events in the story drive the action.

Sharonville students also take part in a social studies curriculum that includes American history. Students develop an understanding about the formation of the United States and the challenges the republic faced in its early years. Primary and secondary sources give students insight into many of these struggles, including the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. Much emphasis is placed on events in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Students study both world wars and identify the ways in which those conflicts impacted the American experience, from social practices to economic output.

Chalk Talk: Making College Less Expensive

Getting a college degree is more expensive today than ever before. But there are a number of steps you can take to lessen the impact of your child’s college education on your pocketbook. First, if your child has time left in high school, encourage them to take AP courses or dual-credit courses in order to earn college credit. Earning these credits while still a high schooler will ensure that you will pay far less for tuition and fees once they get to college. Second, explore community colleges in your area with your child. Community colleges are far less expensive than universities, and they offer far more academic and extracurricular options than they did even a decade ago. Lastly, if your child is still in elementary school or even middle school, opening a college savings account can help cut down on expenses. Many states offer special plans that are sheltered from taxes, so there are savings from that perspective as well.
