Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Somerton District Curriculum

The Common Core Standards focus on Math and Language Arts by detailing the skills and knowledge that students should develop in each topic within the subject. For instance, the Common Core Standards describe abilities that students should gain at each grade level in areas such as algebra, geometry, and data analysis so to build student knowledge to advanced competencies in each subject.

In high school, students learn more complex skills, building on previous skills learned. This is similar to a stairway, with each step representing the next level of learning and also requires that students use reflection, a critical thinking skill, to develop more knowledge. At the high school level, students also have a greater number of choices from Advanced Placement, to a study of the arts or pursuing a career-oriented track and are encouraged to take on a course of study most suited to their goals.

Chalk Talk: Teach Kids Through Play

It is so very important to teach your kids and it could be easier than you think. Play with your kids every day. Wear costumes and do role play. Teach counting by playing with blocks, adding and subtracting with them. Draw with them teaching them to recognize letters and numbers. Teach colors when you play. Outside, play tag or hide and seek. Catch and release lightening bugs. There are so many ways to teach your kids through play. Some of these activities reinforce skills and knowledge that children learn at school. However, all these activities generate discussion, questions and builds the framework that children have with which to understand the wonders of the world. Have fun and learn together.
