Chalk Talk: Benefits of the Arts
Students that participate in arts programs, including both visual and performing arts, reap a number of benefits. The arts promote the development of strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Students learn how to compare, critique, and evaluate in their arts classes, and those skills are widely applicable in other subject areas. There is also a correlation between studying the arts and having success in math class. Particularly for students that study music, math understanding increases greatly as the time that students study music increases. Arts students also see gains in English and language arts skills. Drama, in particular, helps students develop effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, which give them added proficiencies to be successful in their language arts classes. Overall, the benefits to students creative thinking and ability to appreciate the arts is central to successful learning.
