Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sterling Heights District Curriculum

Utica Community Schools offers students a challenging curriculum. Beginning in elementary school, students are taught to take responsibility for their own learning. Literacy instruction at this level includes a focus on comprehension and vocabulary plus learning research and effective study skills. The focus of mathematics instruction is on real-world applications and problem-solving.

The high school curriculum is even more challenging and has more options. The district offers curriculum based on six different career pathways like Health Management or Business, Marketing, and Technology. Each career pathway includes coursework required by the Michigan Department of Education and electives that prepare students for continuing studies in college. With traditional coursework and innovative programs, Utica Community Schools provides rigorous academics to students with a wide array of interests.

This can be as simple as using an interesting fact but writers can also pose questions to their readers or begin with an exclamation that gets a reader’s attention. Another easy technique is to use creative word choice. Replacing generic words like ‘fun’ or ‘good’ with adjectives that are more descriptive will make writing seem more professional. These techniques are easy and will make writing stand out and be noticed!
