Torrington District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Goshen County School District follows the Wyoming Content Performance Standards as the curriculum in their schools. It is a comprehensive curriculum that details learning standards in all core subjects including career/technical education so that students have a well-rounded education which prepares them for life after graduation. Students are expected to achieve these standards and are tested beginning in 3rd grade to ensure they are reaching the goals laid out for them. These assessments also help educators determine where additional instruction and academic resources need to be focused.

We currently cover the following Torrington-area school district: Goshen County School District No. 1.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Torrington District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum is broad and exposes students to literary and non-fiction texts and writing that includes informational themes and short narratives, giving students time and opportunities to demonstrate comprehension and language development. Vocabulary acquisition is a strand of learning emphasized from elementary through high school, and decoding skills taught in relation to word meaning are then applied to finding meaning in more complex written work.

Mathematics learning progresses from foundational skills to algebra, analytics, and mathematical decision making. In middle school, students learn about algebraic operations and how to work with different types of equations. When learning about advanced math functions, topics such as linear and quadratic equations are introduced and students learn how to create models using equations and other factoring methods. From this, students quantitative and logical reasoning skills are developed.

Chalk Talk: Learning How to Use a Library

One of the most important skills a student will learn is how to use their library. Students can use both a local or school library to start developing research skills which go beyond finding a book of interest. Libraries generally subscribe to research databases that would be cost prohibitive for individuals to subscribe to; this gives students a great amount of scholarly content on topics they might be working on a project for. Libraries also have many media holdings from old time recordings to the latest media platforms that students can use to make their own projects or recordings. When students go to college, the library is central to their educational success and they will be expected to navigate the resources offered effectively. Most college libraries offer tours and courses on how to use resources as well, but entering college with familiarity of a library system takes pressure off a new college student.
