Chalk Talk: How to Encourage a Struggling Reader

If you have a child struggling to read, either one just starting kindergarten or one working their way through high school, there are several ways to encourage a love for reading and make an incredible difference in your child’s life. Observe your child and find out what excites them. What do they love doing? What could they spend hours doing and never get bored? Is it collecting bugs? Is it racing dirt bikes? Is it shopping? Find out what they get excited about and get as many books on that topic as you can! Start off with shorter books so that they are not intimidated by the number of pages. You can combine different topics as well. Does your child loves animals and enjoy taking pictures? Get them some National Geographic magazines and read them together. Reading with your child, regardless of their age, is one of the best things you can do to turn a struggling reader into an excelling reader!
