Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ventnor City District Curriculum

The Ventnor City and Atlantic City school districts have both developed curricula that set high expectations for student achievement, while providing flexibility in the way students meet standards and the way teachers deliver content and assess student understanding. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and be active in the learning process. The Common Core Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards provide guidance for what students should learn at each grade level in core subject areas.

Part of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards is the visual and performing arts strand. As part of their study in this area, students learn about the creative processes involved in creating art. Students examine the elements of music and learn how rhythm, melody and tone interact to create music. Music history is studied as well. Students analyze musical movements throughout history and compare and contrast these styles in terms of composition, sound and the instruments used.

Chalk Talk: Tips for Supporting Education at Home

Providing a supportive environment at home for your child’s schoolwork is one of the keys to their academic success. Children who have actively involved parents achieve at a higher level than other students. They get better grades, perform better on exams and have better school attendance. To create a home environment that encourages learning, establish clear expectations for your child’s schoolwork. These expectations should be high, but ensure they are also realistic. Set up a specific time each night for your child to do their homework or study. Make yourself available to them if they need help or guidance, and check in on them periodically, even if they don’t ask for help. Helping establish these routines will provide your child with the support they need to be successful at school.
