Chalk Talk: Special Programming
One of the benefits of having a large district is that different schools can offer different specialty programs and develop an excellent set of courses for students who are interested in a particular subjects. The arts has long been an area where the development of small academies and studio opportunities benefit students who plan a career and life as an artist. The opportunities are increasing, of course, with the emergence of technology in our culture and schools have kept apace by offering more specialized and relevant courses. There are also programs like the International Baccalaureate program which uses its own curriculum and bases its teaching around the exploration of major concepts in the world. Finally, environmental learning has come to the forefront in many schools and there are Outdoor Schools for students who like that kind of hands-on, science learning. While many students may benefit from a more general course of study, specializing is right for many kids as well.
