Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Walkersville District Curriculum
The English language arts curriculum combines the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and research to help build comprehensive literacy and communication skills for students. There is a major emphasis on developing independent readers as well as readers who are able to understand non-fiction. Students are expected to use different analytic skills in these types of reading and are instructed in ways to decode meaning from various text. In writing, students are also expected to develop a wide range of styles such as persuasive, informational, and narrative writing.
The social studies curriculum helps students understand important concepts such as politics, economics, and society. Students learn about the ways other countries are run, the different forms of governments and how each of these create the laws that define their countries. The value of a citizen’s opinions in these various governing units shows the students the importance of their voices in determining laws.

Walkersville District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Frederick County Public Schools uses the Common Core Standards and Maryland Content Standards to provide rigor and coherence to students learning experience. These are standards-based curriculum, with the standards representing the key skills and knowledge that students should become proficient in. The standards are stated broadly so that teachers have flexibility in how they choose to instruct students in each topic. This helps ensure that all students, regardless of learning style, are able to achieve the goals.

My daughter was able to improve her test scores after a few months of tutoring with SchoolTutoring. However, while raising test scores is great, the real payoff is in the self-confidence that she gained.
I just wanted to send a quick note to say thank-you! My son is very impressed with his tutor and looks forward to each session. What’s particularly amazing about this is our son has never really looked forward to math or school for that matter!
We are so happy with the results of your tutoring program and academic support. Homework time was such a stressful evening for the entire evening before we brought your tutors into our home. Thank you for all your help!
Our daughter, a first grader, struggled with basic reading and handwriting. When she began with SchoolTutoring she was almost a year behind her class. Within a year of being enrolled, she is reading above her grade level and has the confidence to match.

Chalk Talk: Special Programming
One of the benefits of having a large district is that different schools can offer different specialty programs and develop an excellent set of courses for students who are interested in a particular subjects. The arts has long been an area where the development of small academies and studio opportunities benefit students who plan a career and life as an artist. The opportunities are increasing, of course, with the emergence of technology in our culture and schools have kept apace by offering more specialized and relevant courses. There are also programs like the International Baccalaureate program which uses its own curriculum and bases its teaching around the exploration of major concepts in the world. Finally, environmental learning has come to the forefront in many schools and there are Outdoor Schools for students who like that kind of hands-on, science learning. While many students may benefit from a more general course of study, specializing is right for many kids as well.
