Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Warren District Curriculum

The curriculum was formed with many goals in mind, and put together so that student learning progresses from the earliest years to high school by skill and knowledge building. In early math, students are introduced to shapes, spatial relations, patterning, and ways to manipulate numbers that prepare them for more advanced concepts in the subject. By high school, students can take courses like calculus or statistics that introduce students to ways in which math is used.

The Language Arts curriculum is built around reading, writing, communication, research skills and media studies. Reading comprehension is taught in all types of literature from editorials to poetry and students develop different types of analytic and interpretation skills. Research skills, including the use of technological resources in conducting research, is taught with an eye to helping students develop tools to evaluate the quality of resources. Students are also taught to recognize perspective and author’s intent.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Writing Workshop?

The term "writing workshop" is used to describe a particular way to teach writing. Students are instructed in writing as a process that they work through, often in collaboration with others. They are taught how to prepare an essay or story, ways to brainstorm and outline their writing, then write, revise and edit each piece of writing until a final draft is finally ready. The goal is to increase the level of self-reflection, organization and focus, use of vocabulary and grammar, and to recognize that all these different parts make up a well-written piece. Students can often collaborate with peers on the editing stage, and also share ideas about creative writing or what might support a point in a persuasive essay. The workshop model offers a lot of creativity for teachers while providing all students with the same elements of process.
