Chalk Talk: Value of AP Classes

Students who have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses in high school should jump at the chance to do so, especially if they intend to go on to college. The rigorous curricula upon which AP courses are based prepare students for the challenges of college-level work. Having appropriate academic skills before heading to college gives AP students a great advantage. AP classes also present financial benefits. Students that successfully pass the AP exam can earn college credit. This reduces the number of classes they will need to take in college, making it easier on parents’ pocketbooks and giving students the opportunity to graduate early or explore other areas of interest. Students that take AP courses also have a chance to explore academic areas that may be of interest to them as a major. Getting early experiences in those academic areas can help kids decide on a major sooner.
