Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Deptford Township District Curriculum

Curriculum development in the West Deptford Public Schools is primarily driven by the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. These standards identify benchmarks for student learning from preschool through the 12th grade. Standards are in place for visual and performing arts, 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, technology, world languages, science and social studies. The curricula for math and languages arts are developed according to the Common Core State Standards.

The Common Core State Standards outline the knowledge and skills K-12 students should acquire in their math classes. Elementary students acquire the foundation for understanding mathematics by learning how to count to 100 by ones and tens, basic fractions and notations. Middle school students study more advanced math concepts, where they learn about proportional relationships, including how to calculate taxes and gratuities. Once in high school, math students continue working on acquiring more complex mathematic skills.

Chalk Talk: What Is a Safety School?

When your child applies for college, you should encourage them to apply to the schools they want to attend, but you should also encourage them to apply to a “safety school.” A safety school is one at which your child is extremely likely to be accepted, just in case they don’t get in to their first schools of choice. Having a GPA and SAT or ACT scores in the top 25% is a good indication of the likelihood that your child would be admitted. But choosing a safety school shouldn’t be based solely on your child’s likelihood of being admitted. Considering the programs offered at the school and whether or not they are a good fit for your child, the distance from home, the school’s reputation and the campus environment are also very important factors in helping your child choose a safety school.
