West Des Moines District and Curriculum

West Des Moines Community School District has a proud history of inspiring students to learn and offers a wide array of relevant classes for all grade levels. Students learn all the core subjects, in addition to foreign language and physical education supplements, starting in elementary school.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the West Des Moines District Curriculum

Core academics for elementary school children include Language Arts, Math, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies and a foreign language (from first grade onward). Specifically, students are taught Spanish for one hour each week between first and sixth grade. At both West Des Moines junior high schools, more electives are offered as students expand their interests. Students can opt to study French or Spanish, and can also choose to take such classes as Energy & Power or Communications Media.

When students enter high school in the West Des Moines school district, they are presented with many options. Freshmen have a campus all their own, Valley Southwoods Freshman High School. Sophomores, juniors and seniors can attend Valley High School or Walnut Creek Campus, an alternative high school. At all high schools, the overall goal is to graduate students who are equipped to thrive in the 21st century.

Keeping Informed: Recent West Des Moines Educational News

  • Teaching Community Outreach - Students from Phoenix Elementary School in West Des Moines delivered goodie-filled baskets to the West Des Moines optimists at Fountain Care West Center. The students also sang to the residents and treated them to lunch at McDonalds.
  • Performing Arts - Stilwell Junior High's Drama Club adopted several families from the surrounding areas and gathered much needed supplies for them this holiday season, such as winter clothes, shoes and hygiene products. The items were given to the families at Children and Families of Iowa in Des Moines.
  • Ancient History for 3rd Graders - Third graders at Hillside Elementary school have been learning about mummies recently. They've been delving into the features of non-fiction texts and how these features can make for better research. Students study on their own during independent reading time and also write down questions they have about mummies, King Tut and Egypt.
