Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Westlake Village District Curriculum

In Math, the Common Core Standards also is the framework which builds students skills in basic operations to operations that use expressions and equations in more complex ways. Measurement and geometry are threaded through the elementary and middle school curriculum, and students will be expected to take a full year of Algebra and Geometry in high school. Data analysis methods are taught beginning with basic probability and moving onto advanced statistics.

Other subject areas provide curriculum frameworks that offer similar K-12 overviews of goals, principles, concepts, and the development of critical thinking skills students will be expected to reach. The aim is that by high school, students are prepared to enter into any of a number of programs designed to motivate and engage students. The curriculum is designed to give students the skills they need to succeed in such pursuits.

Westlake Village District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The schools that students from Westlake Village attend use a curricular model that provides clear, grade-level objectives for students in each subject, the rationales and expected cognitive development students will experience through the subjects, and the skills which will ready students for college and career. By laying out a series of objectives and standards, the alignment of teaching objectives to assessment measures is transparent.

In Language Arts, the schools follow the Common Core Standards, which provides for the development of reading, writing, listening, speaking and language development. Students read all range of texts and focus on analyzing and evaluating the information they read. Students write with an eye to developing a process for pre-writing, writing, revising, and editing. Language-based skills beginning with phonemic awareness and moving towards advanced grammatical concepts are also taught and tested on common assessments.

We currently cover the following Westlake Village-area school district: Conejo Valley Unified School District, Las Virgenes Unified School District.
