The Jefferson Parish Public School District recently implemented the state mandated Common Core Curriculum which provides academic standards in English and Language Arts and Mathematics. In Mathematics, the focus is on learning core math skills including computation, statistics, algebra, geometry and proportional reasoning. Students are encouraged to use what they have learned to higher math and to real life applications. The curriculum is geared to providing students with the skills they will need to be successful.

In English and Language Arts students learn to read, write, speak and listen using correct English. Students are provided with a variety of reading materials during the educational process including literature and informational text so they are prepared for the types of reading they may encounter in college or on the job. The literacy standards outlined in Common Core are used across academic classes so that the emphasis on correct English usage is reinforced.

Chalk Talk: Music for Kids

Music educators report that learning about music and playing an instrument can enhance a variety of learning skills in children. Now parents who want to introduce music to their children can use the PBS website PBS for Kids Music Games to make music education fun. On the site kids will find games like Splat Symphony where Curious George offers colors and paint splats to make music. The Magical Lyrical Solarium allows children to generate song lyrics which are happy or sad or a mixture of the two and then the songs are sung back to them. Make the Band game features Martha Speaks who is in a recording studio and invites kids to change rhythms, vocalists, base volume, and instruments and then play it all together. There are a variety of Zen Musical Compositions that cover jazz, classical, blues, rock and roll, and hip hop. Kids learn about musical composition, different rhythms, and patterns while making their own choices about what to include in their musical piece.
