Wilmington District and Curriculum

Wilmington City Schools is the only public school district serving the city of Wilmington. With over 3,000 students, the district is small enough that each student receives the individual attention he or she needs, while also being large enough that students have a wide variety of opportunities for learning. The district focuses on the three A’s of education: academics, the arts, and athletics. By focusing on these areas, Wilmington City Schools ensures that children acquire knowledge and learn skills in a variety of settings that will prepare them for future success. The district is consistently rated as ‘Excellent’ by the Ohio Department of Education, which reflects the district’s hard work to provide a top-notch education to its students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Wilmington District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum in Wilmington focuses on developing the skills children need to understand their place in terms of time and space. Children develop historical skills such as an understanding that time can be measured, that stories and pictures are a means to share one’s history, and that heritage is expressed through traditions, the arts, and cultural customs. Within these contexts, children develop an understanding of early peoples and how they lived. Students learn how humans had a close interaction with their environment and learned to survive by utilizing resources around them.

Children learn about the development of early civilizations as well, and how those civilizations gave rise to rules of law, social structures, and economies. Students also delve into medieval Europe, and gain insight into the feudal system that governed much of the continent before the 16th century. Students learn about the Renaissance and Reformation as well, and analyze how these events helped shape European institutions and influence ideas.

Chalk Talk: Value of Community College

Some students thumb their nose at the notion of attending community college, yet community college offers a number of benefits. First, community college is inexpensive when compared to the cost of attending a four-year school. The savings incurred by completing the first two years of studies at a community college means students have more money to finish their degree at a university. Second, community colleges offer smaller class sizes than universities. This increased interaction with professors and classmates can help students who struggle to improve their understanding of the subject matter and improve their grades. Finally, many careers today do not require a bachelor’s degree, particularly those in the energy, health care, and technology sectors. Students can get an associate’s degree or complete a certificate program in two years or less, and be immediately employable.
