Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Winslow District Curriculum

Arizona has a rigorous College and Career Readiness program that is designed to help educators give students the academic support they need to succeed. Students begin to learn these skills by putting down a foundation of basic skills in kindergarten, where they learn letter recognition and sounds, as well as number recognition. Writing skills are learned and practiced, with students learning to write their names before moving on to first grade. Objects of different shapes are used to learn to sort and organize according to shapes and colors.

All of the skills are added to with each following grade, with skills becoming more complex with each grade level attained. For instance, in reading, students learn how to decode and interpret meaning in a wide range of texts from poetry to journalism and are then required to write analytically in response to these texts. These skills are usually taught in synthesis so that students are able to draw upon ideas they are reading about in their writing.

Chalk Talk: How Many Extracurricular Activities Should My Child Join?

There are several extracurricular activities students can join. You need to discuss this with your child. You need to decide how much time you and your child are willing to spend on extracurricular activities. Discuss with your child whether they want to be in an academic group, an arts program, sports, robotics league, or other locally available options. Your child needs to participate in things s/he enjoys. If you have more than one child, you as the parent, need to talk to coaches before your child signs up. Ask about practice schedules and how much time your child will be spending in the activity. The main thing is to do your research and make sure you don't overextend yourself or your children. That way it will be enjoyable for everyone and manageable for them.
